The series Captain Pugwash was a popular childrens programme broadcast on BBC television in the UK from 1974 and featured hand animated cartoon cut-outs telling the stories of Pirate Captain Pugwash and his crew. It is a well known fact that the producers delighted in adding some adult double entendres that only grown ups would appreciate in the names of the main characters right? Wrong, if you've heard this statement it is a myth. Folks will tell you that the Captains name of Pugwash is actually an Australian slang term for a sexual activity, and that the characters of 'Seaman Stains' and 'Master Bates' were so named as an adult prank. In reality the characters in the programme consisted of Captain Horatio Pugwash, cabin boy Tom, pirates Willy and Barnabas, and Master Mate. His mortal enemy is Cut-Throat Jake, captain of the Flying Dustman.
